Powdered, Painted, and Perfumed

This book is completely new, being printed only on March 5, 2003.

The use of cosmetics is often discussed in the reenacting community. We have our images from Belle Watling in Gone with the Wind of what we assume is inappropriate cosmetic use. However, a discussion of the proper use of cosmetics is more elusive.

This book addresses the use of cosmetics during the civil war period with some discussion of their history and use in other time periods. It includes some period recipes (not recommended that anyone try to make these) to show what went into some of the period preparations as well as modern recipes that use non-toxic ingredients. It also makes mention of modern products that were not available and, hence, should be avoided by reenactors in preparing their impression and concludes with a 30-page glossary and seven pages of references -- many of them from period sources -- in the bibliography.
